Parent organizations are struggling to get parents involved. Membership in PTAs has declined by over 70% since the 1960s, and getting parents to volunteer can feel like pulling teeth.
Parents offering up their time and expertise to run PTOs and PTAs have an underappreciated role made harder by the same challenges facing schools: anxious, stressed parents who are easy to ruffle, hard to get a response from, and even harder to engage meaningfully.
But given the amount of stress and isolation many parents are experiencing, it’s no wonder that well-meaning requests from PTAs and PTOs might feel like an imposition. For modern parent organizations to succeed, they must rethink their roles and tactics. Instead of serving as a bridge between parents and schools, today’s PTAs and PTOs must focus first on rebuilding community for this generation of parents.
